Good afternoon, Francisco! Here we are with Francisco Puac, Maya spiritual teacher and ceremonial guide. Francisco was born here in the San Pedro la Laguna area, at the Atitlan Lake in Guatemala. He was initiated into his grandparents' spiritual tradition. Francisco considers himself a part of the original Maya people, and runs Mayab School here in San Pedro. Francisco, could you tell me a bit about your personal history?
Thanks! I could say I can separate my personal story into different parts. The first part is that I grew up with my grandparents and my parents, and we specifically lived according to our traditional ways. We would just speak our own Mayan language, we only lived by our old ways and we had our specific Mayan spiritual practice until I was 8 years old. When I was 8, I started to go school where I learned to speak Spanish. We wouldn't live according to our old ways in school, we wouldn't speak our language and I wouldn't cultivate my spiritual connection any more, as the Guatemalan school system does not understand Mayan culture. My Mayan culture and our traditional ways would be reserved for our community only, within our family. Yet, when I learned to speak Spanish I never forgot my language. Then I learned more and more about my family's and my culture's ancestral knowledge, and as I learned to read I got my hands on some of the Maya's ancient books. I read the Popol Vuh, the Chilam Balam, the Mayan codices and other ancestral stories, but I read them in their original language. Later, I got to read the same texts in Spanish, and I could compare and understand the difference between the wording and their meaning in Spanish and in Maya languages. Afterwards I worked with a number of organizations and different government agencies about education and Mayan culture. Right now I have over fifty years of experience as a teacher of Mayan culture as well as spiritual guide, because I love my spiritual tradition. I could say that this is a small resume of what I have been doing in the field of Mayan culture.
Thank you so much! I understood that you are aiming to spread the vital knowledge of the Maya culture. What's an appropriate way to manifest that vision?
The correct and precise way to share the mission that is present in the Mayan calendar - for my life - is first of all to profoundly understand my personal mission and my personal energy, my ‘nahual’, which connects me to the cosmos. When I have properly understood my personal connection to the cosmos, then I can understand the collective thought and mission and what our collective job is here on Earth. In that way, I have gotten to know my personal path and energy, my ‘nahual’ pretty well. I am ‘Toj’, the connection to the sacred fire. I enjoy the Maya spiritual path, and I enjoy working with the Maya cosmovision. I like the Mayan calendar and I enjoy living by it every day. It makes me feel connected to my grandparents’ vision and culture. Working with my own personal energy within my culture, I feel that I am helping others to understand their own paths. I feel that I am doing my job for the collective and that gives me pleasure. That happiness creates the concept, the perception and also the illusion that I am fulfilling my mission, which is to properly teach Maya cosmovision and spirituality, the most essential part of my personal life. To share with others the wisdom of my ancestors in the best possible way. I have been teaching this message, this teaching in all of Guatemala and in many countries in Europe, America and other continents for many years now.
Thank you! There are a lot of people visiting the Atitlan Lake coming from all over the world. How do you personally feel about that?
To receive people from other places, countries and cultures is a manifestation of the cosmos’s natural diversity. Diversity is the wealth of our cosmos. Welcome all cultures! Welcome to all spiritual practices! Welcome to all the values and principles they have! Here we have our own Mayan values and principles, and we cannot impose our own values and principles onto others. Neither do we allow other cultures to impose their values or principles onto our culture. We will only value - as a part of cosmic divinity, infinity and complexity - all cultural manifestations and all people that come to visit. To share Maya wisdom with them is a joy and a privilege. To learn about their cultural background and its manifestation is a natural part of the exchange which results from them being here. It is a joy that you come to visit us, it is a joy to share with and listen to all.
Thanks. Do you feel like there is a lot of potential for healing and fulfilling your vision to share Maya knowledge here at the lake?
Yes. There is a big opportunity, big time and and space to be able to see things now with a lot of positive insight and perspective as so many people are visiting from all over the world. We understand that our culture has a lot to give and we understand the Maya people have a lot to teach now. We understand that the Maya culture is an open book of life which can be shared with all the cultures. And our practice, which we have been practicing and will continue to practice, is an open door and open heart for allowing others to learn our cosmovision, our culture and our language. As we are connected to the original knowledge of our ancestors, the Maya language and as we are able to see through their lens of Maya cosmovision, we understand that we’ve got a big potential to share this with any person who has an interest. We can share the precise, original understanding of our culture and spirituality as we understand it through our own language and cosmovision, and it creates our connection to the cosmos, in that sense. That’s what we’ve got here.
How do you perceive the state of the world in the frame set of cosmic evolution?
First of all, I believe there is a misunderstanding in the sense that diversity is not respected. I don’t agree that there is ‘one way of thinking’, one culture, one people. We can’t accept that idea. I believe we should come from a place of understanding that we’re all different, and we should value diversity. Cultural diversity, spiritual diversity, cosmic diversity, linguistic diversity and the diverse lifeforms. To understand life and understand our connection and communication with the central spirit of the cosmos. This, I believe, ought to be the staring point for creating humane interaction, global co-creation and healthy relationships in the world. Like this we can create a world in peace, a world in harmony, and a happy world where all of us have the same rights. A world where the mother Earth has her rights, the animals and plants have their rights, where the air and water have their rights. Where we as humans can share with our cosmic brothers and sisters the same right to live that we all have. This is what I believe we should work on. This philosophy can be brought to practice through government and institutional plans as well as plans on a smaller scale, so we can create peace plans . Like this we can create true development, and offer a life of happiness to all of the Earth’s population. This is what we need, because confrontation, conflict and all these problems are not humanity´s destiny. Humanity’s supreme objective is collective wealth and common happiness. We ought to be looking for those values and ought to be living examples of these values, as persons, as families, as people. The Maya people have specifically built into their values the ideas of harmony, balance, solidarity, collective wealth and above all collective happiness. This is what I feel we ought to share with the world.
What is your view on the indigenous people’s situation in Guatemala, the Amercias and the world in general?
We are encountering a problem in the world in the sense that there are misperceptions and illusionary constructions as well as political, philosophical, economic and ideological models which are not helping humanity. This is because some believe they are more than others or deem themselves superior to others, or believe that one ethnicity is worth more than another. This does not represent the cosmic emotion, the cosmic feeling or design, which is diverse and creates common well-being. For this reason, no people can be on top of another, superior to another people. The indigenous people of Guatemala, like in the rest of America and the whole world, are considered inferior peoples and cultures. The reality is that the only thing we are doing is living a cosmically connected life, an original life in tune with mother Earth’s rhythm, with the father Sun’s rhythm, with the grandmother Moon’s rhythm and with the rhythm of the cosmos. We are only dancing to the beat of the cosmic tune while respecting and loving one another. That’s what we do, and we are no more or no less than another. We are also not the same as others. We are different, but we are humans who have a right to exist, to live, and above all to live happily in this world.
And what do you feel is essential right now for the energies between peoples and countries in this world to balance out?
I believe we need to change the educational system. We need to change the ideologic system. We also need to change the political system which has governed the world. We humans have tremendous potential. All the people of the world need to understand that by changing these models we’ll have a better life altogether. Above all, to change the educational system means to teach the correct way of human life to new generations and to teach the correct way to live as cosmic beings. We have a future and we have a cosmic destiny, and our life here on Earth is only transitory. We just need more intelligent, more humane, more friendly, more constructive and more peaceful models so that we can spend the little time we have here on Earth living happily and in peace. And like this we also respect the harmony of our original cosmic energy, of our three-dimensional energy here on Earth as well as respect the energy of our future journey. Above all, it’s good to understand what we are projecting into the cosmos. Yet we cannot dance alone, so let’s dance collectively with equal rights to happiness. This is what we ought to be looking for through a more integrative, holistic, and natural education which is more respectful to all lifeforms, especially to human life. These are but a number of ideas. There are more words and ideas but this is a simple path to transforming the state of things now.
Thanks. Do you want to add anything else to the interview?
Yes. I would like to add that the mental transformation of educational centers (including the universities) of the political minds, of the same spiritual minds, is now essential. Simultaneously it is good to know that the models and structures we are now living by are only destroying us. It is a model of self-destrucion and permanent conflict. We can all understand that there are simpler, more practical, more humane ways which also cost a lot less money, and could offer a lot of peace and tranquility to this world. Like this we can create space for new generations to be more happy than we have ever been, so that they can create a much better world than the one we have now.
Thank you very much.
Thank you so much. Matiox.
